Deep Tissue Massage in Vancouver
Targeted relief for chronic muscle tension, tightness, and restricted movement, with treatment tailored to what your body needs.
Chronic muscle tension does not go away on its own. If you are dealing with tightness that has settled into your shoulders, back, or hips over months or years, a lighter touch often is not enough to reach it. Deep tissue massage works into those deeper muscle layers and connective tissue where that tension lives.
At Apana Massage Collective, deep tissue massage is one of the core techniques offered by all three of our Registered Massage Therapists in Gastown. Each of us brings years of experience to every session, and treatment is always shaped around what your body actually needs that day, not a fixed routine.
What Is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage uses firmer, more sustained pressure than a relaxation massage. Instead of staying at the surface, your RMT works gradually into the muscle and fascia beneath it, following the direction of the muscle fibers to release adhesions and reduce restriction.
This approach is well suited to:
Chronic muscle tightness that has not responded to lighter massage
Postural tension from long hours at a desk or on your feet
Recovery from physical strain, overuse, or old injuries
Restricted range of motion in the neck, shoulders, back, or hips
Ongoing stress that shows up as tightness in the body
Deep tissue work can feel intense in the moment, especially in areas that have been holding tension for a while. A skilled RMT reads how your body is responding throughout the session and adjusts pressure so the treatment stays within what is therapeutic for you, not just what feels forceful.
When Your Muscles Need More Than a Light Touch
Our Approach to Deep Tissue Massage
Sue Hartling, Crystal Simser, and Whit Truong each work with deep tissue techniques regularly, and each brings a slightly different lens to it.
In our practice, we often see clients who have tried a general relaxation massage first and found that the tension came right back within a day or two. Deep tissue massage is usually the next step when that happens, and many clients tell us they notice a difference in mobility and ease of movement that a lighter treatment did not give them.
All three of us are registered with and in good standing with the College of Massage Therapists of BC.
What to Expect During Your Deep Tissue Massage Session
Assessment
our RMT will ask about the areas that feel tight or restricted, any injuries or conditions we should know about, and what you are hoping to get out of the session.
Treatment
Pressure builds gradually. Your therapist checks in throughout the session and adjusts based on how your muscles are responding, always working within what is comfortable and effective for you.
Aftercare
You may feel some soreness for a day afterward, similar to how muscles feel after a good workout. Drinking water and light movement afterward can help. Your RMT will let you know what to expect based on the areas treated.
Benefits Clients Notice
Reduced tightness in chronically tense areas like the neck, shoulders, and lower back
Improved range of motion and easier movement day to day
Relief from tension-related headaches
Support for recovery from physical strain or old injuries
A sense of the body feeling looser and less guarded, not just relaxed for an afternoon
Frequently Asked Questions
-
It can feel intense, particularly in areas holding a lot of tension, but it should not feel unbearable. Your RMT works with your feedback throughout the session to keep pressure at a level that is effective without being harmful. Always let your therapist know if something feels like too much.
-
A relaxation or Swedish massage generally uses lighter, flowing pressure aimed at easing stress and improving circulation. Deep tissue massage uses firmer, more targeted pressure to reach deeper muscle layers, and is better suited to chronic tension or specific problem areas rather than general relaxation.
-
This depends on what you are treating. Some clients come in for a single session to address a specific area of tightness, while others with ongoing chronic tension find a regular rhythm, such as every few weeks, helps keep things manageable. Your RMT can talk through what makes sense for your situation.
