Swedish Massage in Vancouver
Slow, flowing massage for stress, everyday tension, and rest, shaped around what your body needs.
Some tension has no single source. It builds across a long week: shoulders creeping toward your ears, a jaw that stays tight, a body that has forgotten how to settle. Swedish massage is made for that. Long, flowing strokes and steady, moderate pressure help your muscles soften and your system slow down.
At Apana Massage Collective, Swedish massage is one of the core techniques offered by all three of our Registered Massage Therapists in Gastown. Each session is shaped around what you need that day, whether that is a full hour of quiet or extra time on a tight neck.
What Is Swedish Massage?
Swedish massage is a full-body technique built on long gliding strokes, kneading, and gentle circular movements, usually with oil or lotion. Pressure is light to moderate and the rhythm is slow and continuous. Your RMT works through the large muscle groups in turn, easing tension while encouraging blood flow and a sense of release throughout the body.
This approach is well suited to:
Everyday stress and mental fatigue that shows up as physical tension
Tight shoulders, neck, and upper back from desk work and screens
Trouble winding down in the evening
A first massage, or a return to massage after time away
Regular self-care when you are not in pain but want to keep tension from building
Swedish massage can do more than relax. Your RMT is trained to assess muscle and soft tissue, so a session can give extra attention to areas that feel tight or sore, with pressure and focus adjusted as you go.
When Your Muscles Need More Than a Light Touch
Our Approach to Swedish Massage
Sue Hartling, Crystal Simser, and Whit Truong each include Swedish massage in their practice. Sue's training also includes myofascial, neuromuscular, and craniosacral work, Crystal takes a holistic approach shaped by experience with chronic injuries, prenatal care, and female health, and Whit's practice is rehabilitative. The same flowing technique can feel a little different with each of us.
In our practice, we often see clients who are holding stress in their bodies and are not sure which kind of massage to book. Swedish massage is a good place to start. We keep the collective small on purpose, so your session is never rushed.
All three of us are registered with and in good standing with the College of Massage Therapists of BC.
What to Expect During Your Swedish Massage Session
Assessment
Your RMT will ask how you have been feeling, where you tend to hold tension, any injuries or health conditions we should know about, and what pressure you prefer.
Treatment
You undress to your comfort level and are draped with a sheet, with only the area being worked on uncovered. Your RMT uses long, flowing strokes and kneading across the body. Pressure stays light to moderate, and you can ask for more or less at any point.
Aftercare
Most people leave feeling relaxed and a little slow, so it helps to leave some room in your schedule afterward. Drinking water and taking it easy for the rest of the day can help you hold on to that settled feeling. Your RMT will let you know if anything specific applies to you.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
The two terms are often used interchangeably. Swedish massage is the technique most people mean when they book a relaxation massage: flowing strokes, light to moderate pressure, and an unhurried pace. When you book, mention in your notes that you would like a Swedish or relaxation session so your RMT can plan around it.
-
Yes. The pressure is gentle to moderate, the pace is slow, and your RMT explains what to expect before you begin. You are covered with a sheet throughout, and you can speak up about pressure or anything uncomfortable at any time.
-
Swedish massage uses lighter, flowing pressure to ease stress and general tension across the whole body. Deep tissue massage uses firmer, slower pressure to reach deeper muscle layers and suits chronic tightness or specific problem areas. If you are not sure which fits, tell your RMT what you are dealing with and they can help you choose.
-
This depends on what you want from it. Some clients book a single session when life gets heavy, while others come regularly, such as once a month, as part of how they manage stress. Your RMT can talk through a rhythm that makes sense for you.
